Enhanced Stats Output for Vitality Netball Superleague 2020

The Vitality Netball Superleague has upped its digital game this season with a new stats output which is giving fans (and pundits) greater insight than ever before.

Last year Sotic launched a brand new digital platform for the VNSL on the WordPress content management system (CMS). Ahead of the start of the 2020 VNSL season, which got underway on the 22nd February, we undertook some development work to allow the Superleague to score their matches within their own website CMS for the first time.

This means that fans can now see both team and player stats for intercepts, defensive and offensive rebounds, deflections, turnovers, intercepts and unforced errors as well as goals, missed shots and penalties.

Development of a plugin exclusively for the VNSL

We’ve done this by building our own plugin, exclusively for the VNSL.

We’ve created a VNSL Score Centre where Superleague technical staff can score and stat-track live matches.

The VNSL website makes use of SportsPress to house the data for Fixtures, League Tables, Teams and Players. Our Score Centre integrates directly with SportsPress which then pushes the information through the website database, updating the team and player stats as well as the league table for display on the website front-end for users.

Using VueJs to create bespoke stat layouts

Instead of using SportsPress’s standard shortcodes to display the stats, we’ve created API endpoints for all data and used VueJS, a framework for building user interfaces. This means that we have been able to create bespoke layouts to ensure that the data is presented in a way that’s in keeping with the aesthetics of the website.

We’ve also been able to gain some big performance benefits by using VueJS which means the Superleague site is superfast for users.

Sotic’s Build Team Lead Dan Drave commented;

“It’s been fantastic to develop something truly ground-breaking for the Netball Superleague and to see fans and the media enjoying this new level of insight.

We work with a number of sports, such as football and rugby, where live scoring is carried out by a licensed statistics provider however the development of our own plugin for the VNSL, potentially opens up opportunities for us to do similar work for other sports that may not have the benefits of a live scoring technology partnership.”
